Houdini Patchwork Leather Tote
The Houdini style vintage leather bags (strap style + patchwork style) are MADE TO ORDER. Every bag is made from hand selected vintage materials and is ONE-OF-A-KIND and is not the bag shown in the photographs.
“Anything is Possible”…An apropos motto attributed to Harry Houdini (1874 – 1926), the renowned magician and escape artist who became one of the 20th century’s most legendary performers. With a talent for self-promotion and provocation, this immigrant son of a poor Hungarian rabbi rocketed to international fame and grabbed front page headlines with his gripping theatrical presentations and heart-stopping outdoor spectacles.
Our Houdini bags take their cue from the “The Man No Jail Could Hold”–referencing straitjackets, shackles, handcuffs and other means of restraint. Leather strapping, industrial rivets, and heavy canvas combine in ways intended to convey bondage apparatus cobbled together out of materials available to a 19th century smithy. Everything is handcrafted in Claremont, California.

J. Augur Design was founded and operates with an enduring commitment to environmental principles and fair employment in all our business operations. We create accessories and decor from 95% used materials–offering environmentally friendly products replacing the demand for non-green products. We incorporate principles of sustainability into our business and personal practices: recycling all materials responsibly and donating any excess to others for re-use. Whenever possible we buy used and recycled equipment, supplies and furnishings from local suppliers. We work a four-day week to reduce commuting and energy use, and to promote a work-life balance. Our studio staff earn well above the living wage for our county. We constantly strive to increase our awareness and deepen our consciousness about environmental issues and human rights causes–and respond through our actions accordingly. As put forth by the United Nations General Assembly in the 1987 Report of the World Commission on Environment and Development, we are a small organization that: “meets the needs of the present world without compromising the ability of the future generations to meet their own needs.”
Thank you for supporting our endeavor to bring material culture to a material world in a responsible fashion,
